Behind the movie..
“Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses” is the 6th full length, direct-to-DVD princess story. In this enchanting musical tale, Barbie partners with the New York City Ballet. The ballet moves in the movie are choreographed by the New York City Ballet’s Master in Chief Peter Martins and performed by the ballet company’s prima ballerinas.Â
The line of toys from “Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses” features a full line of dolls of each of the characters. Dolls are based on the characters Princess Genevieve, Prince Derek, and each of Barbie’s 12 sisters in the movie - both younger and older sisters. The “Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses” toy line also includes a wonderful horse and carriage set which is roomy enough for 12, a beautiful vanity and plush toys like the Twyla Ballerina plush kitten.
“Barbie(TM) in The 12 Dancing Princesses,” the first release in a multi-year collaboration between Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Mattel, generated double-digit growth in its first week at retail, an increase in DVD sales roughly 15% over the previous princess-themed installment, 2005’s “Barbie(TM) and the Magic of Pegasus.” This latest release sold approximately 500,000 units, also out-performing Mattel’s 2004 DVD “Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper” in its first week on store shelves. The all-new enchanting and spectacular Barbie(TM) princess movie — featuring the world’s most popular doll(1) — danced its way into the hearts of home entertainment family audiences on September 19, 2006.
The combination of these powerhouse brands has successfully served to grow this proven seven-year-old entertainment property, reversing the usual trend of sales erosion that is often experienced by an ongoing DVD series.
“We’re thrilled that Mattel has put its confidence in Universal Studios Home Entertainment to market and distribute this widely embraced Barbie(TM) direct-to-DVD family franchise,” said Craig Kornblau, President, Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “Based on the strong early sales of ‘Barbie(TM) in The 12 Dancing Princesses,’ we have not only defied the traditional sales trend but we’ve paved the road for this property’s future growth and success.
“Based on a strong start at retail and a track record of success, we’re confident that ‘Barbie(TM) in The 12 Dancing Princesses(TM)’ will be a big hit this season among families,” said Richard Dickson, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Media and Entertainment, Mattel. “Our nine Barbie(TM) movies have now sold more than 30 million collective units worldwide, and each of our princess titles have been No. 1 on the Nielsen Entertainment VideoScan Top Kid Video charts — even weeks after their initial street dates — proving that Barbie(TM) entertainment is a hugely successful franchise in a sometimes challenging DVD industry.”
“Barbie(TM) in The 12 Dancing Princesses” transports viewers to a magical world where wishes come true. Barbie(TM) stars as the beautiful Princess Genevieve(TM), the seventh sister of 12 beautiful princesses, who discovers a secret entrance to a joyful, carefree world. When their father, the king, is in danger of losing his kingdom, his dozen dancing daughters show him that the power of family love can overcome all obstacles. With delightful choreography from the New York City Ballet, an original score and special bonus features, this all-new, full-length CGI-animated movie will touch the hearts of girls everywhere.
